OTA Recommends Journals Avoid Offensive Acronym

By OTA Community posted 08-30-2022 14:18

Dear OTA Members and Colleagues:

The OTA Presidential Line and Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Editorial BOD recently received a letter regarding a publication announcement for an article that used an unacceptable acronym for “Trans-Iliac Trans-Sacral.”  Given the offensive nature of this acronym, the OTA is requesting that the journals where this reference is most likely to be utilized prohibit its use and recommend Trans-Iliac screw or Trans-Sacral screw when referring to this configuration. I am writing to ask that members of our Society honor this request as well in your publications, presentations and communications.

I would also like to share with you the OTA’s recently approved Code of Conduct, drafted by the Diversity Committee. I would like to acknowledge the work of the Diversity Committee, and ask each of our members to review and commit to a goal of providing a welcoming environment for all participants, free from offensive language, images and messaging.

Sincerely,

Michael T. Archdeacon, MD
OTA President
