Enhanced Resources Needed to Address Patient Mental Health

By OTA Community posted 09-14-2022 11:20

In its Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient (2022 Standards), the American College of Surgeons requires Level 1 and 2 trauma centers to screen for mental illness among all new trauma patients, and to provide resources to treat mental health issues. While OTA recognizes this essential need for patients recovering from injury, we also recognize that formal education, training, and knowledge in this arena is grossly lacking, and that almost no trauma centers have embraced this practice in the past. The OTA Board understands the magnitude of this concern and the possibility for enormous impact by taking a lead role in educating physicians and patients, and by encouraging the development of new programs.

OTA is offering a program grant to help develop resources for patient mental and social health. The award will be up to $5,000, but requires a match from the institution to support the proposal at double the level of the proposal. Grantees will have access to support from the OTA Patient Mental Health Task Force.
