1st IOTA Triennial Meeting Exceeds Expectations

1st IOTA Triennial Meeting: A Major Success

The long-anticipated First Triennial Meeting of the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association (IOTA) in Amsterdam this past December was a major
success and great step forward for the global academic orthopaedic trauma community. The success of an academic meeting can be measured by attendance, participation, content, and camaraderie. This first meeting excelled in all these categories. The IOTA member societies, including the OTA, are extremely grateful to our Dutch Trauma Society partners for co-hosting this first meeting with their Annual Meeting, including Victor de Ridder, the main content organizer from the program committee, Kees Jan Ponsen, the meeting President, and Mike Hoogervorst, the society President, as well as Nikki Buijs and Jerry Gaspersz from the organizing committee. Their work on local arrangements and close partnership on the many presentations and symposia enabled the success of this event.

We appreciate the valued participation and support of the many attendees from IOTA member societies who contributed as presenters, panel members, and moderators. We congratulate the newly inaugurated members of the first class of Fellows of the IOTA (FIOTA) for their honorary recognition as global surgeon leaders as nominated by their respective societies. This first meeting undoubtedly established a very high bar for the next triennial gathering in Guadalajara in 2025, and we look forward to working on the many collaborative projects on our pathway to that next meeting.

Brendan M. Patterson, MD, President, OTA
Theodore Miclau, III, MD, Steering Committee Chair, International OTA

Conference Overview

It was a great pleasure to bring together over 1200 participants from 30 countries (24 IOTA countries) to join the First Triennial Meeting in Amsterdam and “work together to improve the outcomes” of Orthopaedic and General Trauma. The meeting was officially opened on Wednesday, December 14th by Prof. Brendan Patterson, President of the OTA, Prof. Ted Miclau, Steering Committee Chair of the IOTA, and Prof. Ernst Kuipers, the Dutch Minister of Health and Sports. From that moment on, all participants had the opportunity to choose from presentations and symposia in six parallel sessions during the three-day congress. Sessions were organized by many of our IOTA member societies, partner organizations such as ATLS, ESTES, AO, DKOU, DSATC, as well as the Dutch Society of OR nurses (LVO) and, of course, the Dutch Trauma Society (NVT) itself, which had the honor of being the organizing society for the meeting in combination with its Annual International Dutch Trauma meeting.
The first day consisted entirely of IOTA-related offerings. An important highlight of the day was the inauguration of the Fellows of the IOTA (FIOTA), where 112 members from 19 societies were inaugurated into the first class of Honorary Fellows of our rapidly growing organization! Throughout the rest of the congress, there were many keynote, instructional course, and invited lectures, combined with scientific podium and poster presentations. Poster presenters had the opportunity to give a short, live power-pitch presentations, moderated by many of our newly inaugurated Honorary FIOTA and other IOTA members, which was highly appreciated by presenters and attendees alike. In total, the meeting featured 517 presentations in 79 sessions on 37 different topics.
The free scientific podium and short poster presentations were scored by an IOTA and NVT team of judges. From these scores, the best podium and short presentations were selected as IMPACT Award recipients, which were recognized at the Closing Ceremony. Additionally, the top five short pitch and full podium presentations were offered the opportunity to apply for a journal publication fee waiver in Injury and the OTA International (OTAI), respectively, two highly esteemed orthopaedic trauma publications. The recipients of the IMPACT Award were Luke Myhre from the USA and Dr. Thymen Houwen from the Netherlan
ds. Dr. Myhre presented on “Patient Reported Anxiety Scores Associated with Lower Physical Function in Orthopedic Trauma Patients' and Dr. Houwen presented on “Health related quality of life in patients with a bone fracture by using PROM(I)S: a retrospective cohort study”.
Throughout the meeting, there were many opportunities to meet new friends and visit with known colleagues, highlighted by two well-attended social events. On Wednesday, we enjoyed the memorable sights of Amsterdam’s famous inner-city canals on boats, with the city’s holiday and “Amsterdam Light Festival” works of art lights. On Thursday evening, at the special Conference Party held on the bank of the Amstel River, many attendees showed their best moves on the dance floor after a delicious cocktail dinner.
The next day, Friday afternoon, this First Triennial meeting came to an end at the Closing Ceremonies. After the awards and recognition presentations, the meeting was adjourned by handing over the IOTA Flag to representatives of the next triennial meeting organizing Society, FEMECOT, which will organize the 2nd Triennial meeting in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2025.

It was such a pleasure and opportunity to see so many of you at the First Triennial meeting. We look forward to meeting with everyone again, as well as many more new IOTA member society attendees and FIOTA members at the 2nd Triennial in 2025. It was a distinct honor for the Dutch Trauma Society to host this meeting in Amsterdam, and our special thanks go out to the OTA, to Ted Miclau and his team from the OTA office (Vanessa Morales, Alanna Kaiser and Kathleen Caswell), to Jerry Gaspersz and his team from the local organizing group, and to all of you who made the meeting to a success through your presence, participation, and experience while generously taking time away from your families to join us in Amsterdam.

Kind regards,
Kees Jan Ponsen, MD
President, Dutch Trauma Society Organizing Committee

Introducing the Newly Inducted Fellows of the International OTA (FIOTA)

On Wednesday, December 14th, the first class of the Fellows of the IOTA (FIOTA) nominated from 19 different countries took the stage as they were officially inducted at the ceremony led by Dr. Theodore Miclau, III, MD, IOTA Steering Committee Chair, and Dr. K.J. Ponsen, MD, President Combined IOTA Triennial and Dutch Trauma Society Meeting.

FIOTA is an honorary acknowledgement initiated to publicly recognize individuals who have gained a status of outstanding professional contributions and high achievement in the field of orthopaedic trauma education and research worldwide. Each IOTA society member had the benefit of nominating a maximum of 1% of their membership to this newly created distinction of ‘fellow of the IOTA’, or ‘FIOTA’, and are now able to carry the honorary letters after their names. These letters indicate the national recognition and international standing of the FIOTA member. Congratulations to all of the newly inducted Fellows of the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association!
